the Peninsula Library, runs July 30th to August 27th, 2011. Join us for an
opening reception Saturday, July 30th, 2-4 PM. NOTE: This year's show will
be a featured event of the Crooked River Fiber Fling (please visit

We want to make sure everyone knows that the May Fiber CAFE meeting will not be at PAA this Saturday morning.  Instead, if you can make it, plan to attend the Great Lakes Fiber Festival at the Wooster fairgrounds.  There will be many fiber vendors – roving, fleece, yarn, tools, gift items, books and much more.  If going to the Festival Saturday morning doesn’t fit your schedule, please note that the festival goes on both Saturday and Sunday.  If I missed anyone, please forward.  See you in Wooster!!

The Fiber CAFÉ group of the Peninsula Art Academy is proud to announce the first CROOKED RIVER FIBER FLING, which will occur August 4 -7th in Peninsula.  Many fiber-focused events as well as family activities are planned throughout the community.  Thursday and Friday include fiber workshops, as well as the Wearable Art Show Friday evening (details for artists and guests interested in viewing this fun event to follow).  Saturday and Sunday include vendor booths with sales of fiber related materials and fine handmade gifts, demonstrations, kids activities, hands on activities, animal demonstrations, and more workshops.  Also planned are demonstrations on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and dog-herding demonstrations at the Spicy Lamb.We will be holding our annual fiber show (our 8th show) at the Peninsula Library (get your pieces ready), as well as a special show in the Peninsula Art Academy Gallery, showcasing the work of the accomplished artists that will be teaching our workshops.  Please make plans to view both of these wonderful fiber shows.

Workshop instructors include Sharon Costello, Suzanne Higgs, Sally Mellville, Carol Adams, Joan Brasaemle, Gerrie Hotton, Jennie Hutchings, Mary Kapenekas, Rosanna Ludwig and Cris Welch.  Class topics include spinning, weaving, felting, knitting, dyeing (marbling) surface design and basketry.  Additional classes may be added.  Stay tuned.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with this exciting fiber event.  If you wish to help by working or demonstrating at the Fiber Fling, or if you have time to help before the event, please contact us at info@fibercafe.org.

Advanced, Intermediate & Beginner Levels.  Learn contemporary fiber art techniques from industry professionals. Full day, half day classes Thurs., Fri., Sat., Sun.  Pre-registration a must.   www.fibercafe.org

Featured Instructors  

Sally Melville, knitting designer, teacher and author.  Book titles include: Warm Knits, Cool Gifts and The Knitting Experience Books 1-2-3. 

Sharon Costello, known for her prize winning needle felted art dolls and felted vessels. Her work has been featured in the Home and Garden TV Network, and many books.  

Suzanne Higgs, acclaimed for her nuno felted silk scarves, shawls, felted hats, flowers & fine artwork; featured in Spin Off Magazine and many books including Indygo Junction’s Needle Felting: 22 Stylish Projects for Home & Fashion.

Talented Local Instructors 

Carol Adams, weaving off-loom;  Joan Brasaemle knitting modules that combine to make larger pieces; 

Jennie Hutchings, two workshops: traditional basketry and wild & crazy baskets.

Wearable Art Fashion Show & Sale   Friday Aug 5th 6-9pm – Juried Fashion Show.  Wine & Cheese Bar.  Sally Melville will give a brief lecture & book signing.  Most items for sale.  Space is limited—reserve in advance. Admission: $15 advance/ $20 at the door. 

Boutique & Vendor Booths   Sat. & Sun. 10am-5pm The historic Boston Township Hall & G.A.R. Hall will be filled with Fiber Art for Sale in a Boutique Setting. One-of-a-kind sweaters, shawls, hats, purses, jewelry, wall hangings & fine art.  Outstanding selection of wool, fiber, yarn, supplies and equipment.  Juried selection for the highest quality.  Breakfast, lunch & dinner available at the GAR Hall.  $5 per person/$15 per family (access to all Sat. & Sun. venues). 

Animal Tents & Vendor Booths   Sat. & Sun. 10am-5pm Heritage Farms will be filled with rows of booths and animals pens.  Browse a wide variety of fiber-related art & crafts, fiber supplies, yarn & equipment displays.  Visit the pens & tents with visiting alpacas, sheep, llamas, goats, and alpaca rabbits.  $5 per person/$15 per family (access to all Sat. & Sun. venues).

Kids Events & Learning Activities   Aug 6-7 10am-5pm  Mini workshops, make-it-take-it projects and tie-dye T-shirt stations at Peninsula Art Academy.  Material fees apply. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad passengers enjoy free demonstrations & kids projects Sat & Sun.

8th Annual Fiber Art Show   Peninsula Library & Historical Society. Open to all fiber enthusiasts. Any media that contains or speaks to fiber. Cash Awards for 1st-2nd-3rd Place. Most items for sale.  July 30- Aug 28.  Free admission.

Kids & Family Events: We’ll have visiting alpacas, llamas, sheep, goats, and angora rabbits to enjoy “fiber in the raw.”  Learn how to transform hair ,  fur and fiber into yarn, then into clothing, fine art, and home accessories. Lots of kids activities, demonstrations & learning events. Mini workshops, Make-it-Take-it projects and Tie-Dye T-Shirt station at the Peninsula Art Academy from 10am-5pm, Sat & Sun.  Material fees apply. 

Visit Heritage Farms, and The Spicy Lamb Farm (Saturday & Sunday only) to see the animal visitors and learn more about these friendly animals who give up their fur to provide us clothing, fabric, home accessories and artwork.  Local Ohio farms represented.  Event ticket:  $5 per person/$15 per family (access to all Sat. & Sun. venues). 

Ride the train into Peninsula—Excursion packages will be available. Avoid parking congestion, view wildlife and wetlands—lunch at the G.A.R. Hall.  Join the free demonstrations on our special fiber train car.  Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Depot stations: Canal Visitor Center, Brecksville Station, Boston Mill, Indigo Lake, Botzum and Akron Northside Depots.
